Church’s shoe exhibition opens at Northampton Museum

12/09/2006
A new exhibition which chronicles the story of Church’s shoes is to open at the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and will be open from September 16 – December 3.

The story began in the late 1600s when a lone Northampton man called Stone Church began making shoes. His skills were passed on through four generations and in 1873 the three brothers expanded the family’s cottage industry and Church’s Shoes was established.

The exhibition called ‘With these hands we make great shoes’ is showing for the first time and will include information from the company’s past as well as looking at its present day image.

Running alongside the exhibition there will be weekly shoemaking demonstrations and a one-off lecture on shoemaking on October 28.
