Calls for wage rise for Pakistan tannery workers

A local tanneries association in Pakistan has called for higher wage levels for labourers working in tanneries in Kasur, in the Punjab Province, so that these workers are paid in accordance with a new labour policy revised by the government.

According to local media reports, a politician in the region claims that child labour laws in Kasur tanneries are being violated and demanded that the minimum wage for workers be fixed at PRs4,000. ($66). He also stated that health and safety violations are rife in tanneries in the area, although tannery owners have denied this accusation.
