China plans to raise quality of its car exports

01/09/2006

A spokesman from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has announced that only authorised manufacturers will be allowed to export automobiles next year in an effort to raise the quality of Chinese exports.

The statement followed an earlier announcement that China plans establish eight automotive export manufacturing bases which will house 160 auto and auto parts makers.
Under the regulations to be brought in for next year, manufacturers that achieved only nominal exports or failed to guarantee their product quality or provide solid after-sales service will be banned from exporting cars in order to prevent further damage to the reputation of China's car industry, the minister said. However, no details of the criteria required to achieve export authorisation were revealed.

With an annual growth rate of more than 100% since 2003,China's car exports topped $10 billion last year.
