US consumer products company Brown-Forman Corporation is exploring strategic alternatives for its subsidiary, Hartmann, Inc., a manufacturer of leather goods and luggage, including a possible sale.

"Hartmann is a strong and recognisable brand in its industry and enjoys a legion of dedicated and loyal consumers," said Paul Varga, Brown-Forman's chief executive officer. “With Brown-Forman's increasing focus on our global beverage business, we want to ensure that Hartmann and its employees have the very best chance to realise their full potential. Accordingly, we're exploring a full range of strategic options."

Founding in 1877 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and now based in Lebanon, Tennessee, it is one of the oldest luggage manufacturers in America.

It is also the sole remaining business in continuing operations that is outside Brown-Forman’s core beverage portfolio.

Hartmann had sales of $32 million in the fiscal year ending April 30.
