The National Basketball Association (NBA) has introduced a new official non-leather game ball for play beginning in the 2006-2007 season..The introduction of the new microfibre ball, produced by Spalding, marks the first change to the official ball in 35 years, and the end of an era for the sport.

The new composite material is said to eliminate the need for the break-in period which is necessary for the current leather ball.
