Restructuring plan announced for KAT

29/06/2006

According to reports, there is new hope that 150 jobs could be saved at the Karas Tannery and Abattoir (KAT) in Keetmanshoop, Namibia. The proposed job losses were the result of the company’s decision to cease its ostrich slaughtering operations, which will close in July.

Under a restructuring plan the facility will be converted into an abattoir for game and small livestock rather than a tannery in an attempt to secure the 150 jobs that were under threat. The plant already slaughters a large number of sheep.

The new plan is subject to the approval of the company’s major shareholders.
