Leather garment industry appeals to government

According to media reports, representatives from the Pakistan leather garment industry have urged the government to establish skill development and training institutes for the industry. They have also requested that money is allocated for research and development into exports in a bid to increase the volume of leather garment sold overseas.

Chairman of Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association Fawad Ijaz Khan has also urged the government to cut import duties on leather and textile garment machinery in order to lower production costs and prices. He claims that the market potential in Russia and Europe could be as high as $5 billion if the industry is well supported.

He asked the government to introduce long-term export policies so that investment and production can be planned more appropriately and warned that escalating production costs were leading to a loss in trade in favour of Chinese and Turkish garments.
