Customs duty on water treatment plants removed

13/06/2006

The Bangladeshi government has abolished a 25% customs duty on the import of water treatment plants to enable industrialists to set up such facilities, as it  is now obligatory for manufacturers to set up waste effluent treatment plants.

Finance minister Saifur Rahman has proposed an allocation of Tk 2420 million ($34.57 million) for the Ministry of Environment and Forest in fiscal 2006-7 and it is hoped that some of this money will be used to set up a modern leather industry city in Savar, near Dhaka at a cost of $27 million.
