Germany becomes main importer of Indian leather

Germany was the top buyer of Indian leather and leather products in the period April 2005 to January 2006. Germany's leather imports from India totalled $291.57 million compared with $283.69 million in the same period last year - a rise of 2.78%. Germany now accounts for 13.14% of  all Indian leather exports.

The second largest importer of Indian leather was the UK, with total imports worth $284.69 million, followed by the USA with $263.84 million and Italy with $2038.84 million compared with $247.34 million, $244.63 million and $201.47 million respectively, in the same period a year before.

Between April 2005 and January 2006, India’s leather exports registered a growth of 9.56% to reach $2,219.71 million from $2,026.10 million in the corresponding period last year.

According to statistics released by the Indian Ministry of Commerce & Industry, India recorded an increase of 2.49% in exports of finished leather during the same period, totalling $511.81 million from $499.36 million in the same period a year earlier. Leather footwear exports increased 23.35% to $618.29 million from $501.24 million; footwear components rose 0.17% to $146.07 million from $145.83 million; leather goods increased 12.96% to $541.02 million from $478.93 million and saddlery and harness exports rose by 26.27% to $61.97 million from $49.07 million.
 

Meanwhile, exports of leather garments fell by 0.02% to $289.79 million from $289.86 million.

During the same period, India imported raw hides and skins and finished leather worth $245.09 million, a 13.83% increase over the $215.32 million recorded in the corresponding period last year.
