900 job cuts expected at GM's Ellesmere Port plant

General Motors Europe management is in discussions with trade unions over the company’s intention to adjust the current production capacity of its Ellesmere Port plant, by reducing from three- to two-shift operation.

This could lead to up to 900 job losses at the company’s plant in Ellesmere Port, UK, and is expected to become effective following the summer shutdown in August.

According to the company, the move reflects ongoing pressure in the automotive sector to increase productivity and reduce costs. It is said to be necessary for the company to remain competitive and enable the industry to retain production in Western Europe.
