Decline in Sri Lankan leather exports

According to data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the country exported leather and leather goods worth $1.5 million in January 2006 compared with $1.88 million in January 2005, a decline of 20.37%. Footwear exports also decreased, falling to $0.66 million in January 2006 compared with $1.09 million in January 2005, a decline of 39.66%.

For the January to September 2005 period Sri Lanka exported leather and leather goods worth $20.94 million compared with $ 22.09 million in the same period the year before. On a slightly more positive note, footwear exports in this period rose to $9.06 million versus $8.77 million in the comparable period a year earlier.
