Chinese tannery attacked in pollution protests

03/05/2006

According to local media reports villagers recently rampaged through a tannery complex in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, in protest over alleged air and water pollution in the area.

Four facilities, including a tannery, were targeted by the villagers who were angered over emissions and wastewater discharges from the factories in question. According to the report, the main perpetrator of the pollution is the Pu’an Tannery Sewage Treatment Plant, an auxiliary facility that started its first phase of operation last August with a daily treatment capacity of 5,000 tons. The effluent from this facility is said to have contaminated farmland and polluted local water sources.
