Bangladesh seeks foreign investment in leather sector

06/04/2006
Bangladesh’s government is introducing a new policy for the leather sector aimed at attracting foreign direct investment, increasing exports and reducing pollution. Speaking at a workshop on Strategies and Implementation Plan to Improve Export Performance in the Leather Sector (SHAPE), Bangladesh Advisor to the Ministry of Commerce Barkat Ullah Bulu stated that the policy could be approved within the next three months as it now only requires final approval from the cabinet.

Commenting on the new policy, chairman of the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association (BLLGFEA) Tipu Sultan said that Japan is one of the target export destinations for Bangladeshi leather and leather goods as Bangladesh products can now enjoy 98.6% duty-free imports into Japan.
