Argentina raises export duty on raw hides to 15%

03/04/2006

The Argentinean government has reinstated a 15% export duty on raw hides and low added-value pelts.

Argentinean President Néstor Kirchner announced that the resolution - signed in November 2005 by the then Minister of the Economy, Roberto Lavagna - that reduced duty to 8% would be revoked, as it had failed. The decision to reduce the duty on exports was initially designed to benefit meatpackers and force meat prices lower. However, it was deemed to have failed as it altered the local raw hide market leading to a large increase in prices and causing a negative impact on the leather production chain.
