New school teaches the art of leather
21/03/2006
A new school has been established in the Langudeoc region of France allowing people to discover and practice Guadameci - an ancient art form that involves the design and decoration of pure vegetable tanned leathers. Jorge Centofanti, who is the leading exponent on Guadameci, founded Atelier des Arts last year.
The courses, which include Embossing, Parchment and Vellum Hangings, Tooling, Stamping and Engraving, and Gilding Wall Hangings, are suited to anyone with a desire to learn a new artistic technique and with an affinity for leather and luxury. Designed for beginners with an interest in art or craft, each course lasts between three to 10 days. At the end of the courses, all students get to take home their own finished piece.
Jorge Centofanti is recognised internationally as the leading exponent of Guadamecí and he founded the school last year. He said: "I believe passionately that this is an art form to be enjoyed by future generations and it needs to be understood and appreciated more widely. I can think of no greater satisfaction than being able to pass on my knowledge to people of any age who have the desire to create art in the rich medium of Guadamecí."
Through his work,Jorge has created murals for luxury hotels, hangings for Middle Eastern Palaces and many tableaux and individual commissions of his work have gone to private collectors in different parts of the world. In 1992 he was commissioned to do a Coat of Arms by the City Council of Northampton, which was unveiled by HM Queen Elizabeth II.
