FMD confirmed in Argentina

14/02/2006

Argentina has confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease on a farm in San Luís del Palmar, in the Province of Corrientes which borders Paraguay and the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The outbreak is located on the right-hand bank of the Paraná River, 280 km from Rio Grande do Sul and 25 km from Paraguay.

The national Service for Sanitation and Food Quality (Senasa) has reported that the 70 infected cattle have been slaughtered and another 3,000 head on the same farm will be slaughtered for domestic beef consumption.

As a result of this outbreak, Argentina has lost its status as a "country free from FMD with vaccination" and several countries have already banned imports of Argentine beef.
Among the sanitary measures adopted by the local government are the isolation of the affected area and tracking the origin of the infected animals to find out where the problem began.

Senasa has announced that the current vaccination campaign will be accelerated and should be carried out in 30-40 days instead of the 60 days that was initially proposed.
Although this is an unwelcome event, Corrientes is not part of Argentina's main beef producing region of Pampa and the provinces of Buenos Aires, Entre Rios and Córdoba.
