During December 2005, Pakistan's leather sector exports grew by 25% to reach $96.382 million from $77.082 million in November 2005. According to data released by Federal Bureau of Statistics, the increase was mainly attributable to a rise in the export of leather garments - which recorded growth of 36.92% in terms of value over November 2005.
A breakdown showed that Pakistan exported finished leather worth $19.832 million, leather goods worth $66.758 million and footwear worth $9.792 million compared with $18.7 million, $51.851 million and $6.531 million respectively in the prior month. This equated to a 6.05% increase in the exports of finished leather, a 28.75% rise in leather goods and 49.93% growth in footwear exports.
Pakistan’s total leather exports from July to December reached $565.677 million compared with $453.476 million in the comparable period a year earlier - an increase of 24.75%. During this period, 8.073 million m2 of finished leather was exported worth $135.398 million compared with 9,019,000 m2 worth $146.572 million in July-December 2004 - a decline of 7.62%. Leather goods exports reached $364.985 million, (which includes leather garments valued at $265.141 million and leather gloves $72.934 million) compared with $251.122 million in the corresponding period last year – equating to a rise of 45.34%. The country also exported 8.063 million pairs of footwear worth $65.294 million (which includes leather footwear exports of $56.331 million) compared with 7,912,000 pairs at $55.782 million in same period a year ago – a growth of 17.05%.
