30/01/2006

A new body is being established to oversee the development of the infrastructure at the Korangi Industrial zone, Pakistan, where more than 200 small and large tanneries are situated. The new authority - the Korangi Industrial Trading Estate (KITE) - will be headed by Abdul Haseeb Khan, former chairman of the Korangi Association of Trade & Industry (KATI). The initial capital to set up the organisation will be PRs500 million, 50% of which will come from central government and 50% from the provincial government of Sindh.

A proposal has been made for the new authority to levy a nominal excess on export-oriented industries including leather tanneries and garment manufacturers. Approximately 30% of the leather sector’s export earnings are generated by the leather industry situated in the Korangi zone.
