South Korea to lift ban on US beef

17/01/2006
The United States and South Korea have reached agreement on an initial import protocol that would reopen South Korea's market to certain exports of US beef, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns and US Trade Representative Rob Portman announced on January 13.

The agreement authorises the United States to export boneless beef from cattle under 30 months of age, subject to an export verification programme.

South Korea banned imports of US beef in December 2003 when a case of BSE was identified in the state of Washington, in a single cow of Canadian origin.
Before the ban, South Korea was the third-largest market for US beef, importing $815 million worth of beef and beef products in 2003.

US officials welcomed the agreement as a first step toward normalisation of beef trade. Mr Portman said that the United States would continue to press South Korea to lift restrictions on US exports of bone-in beef, variety meats, and offal, which historically have constituted about half of US beef exports to that country.
