During November 2005, Pakistan's leather exports fell by 9.36% to $77.081 million from $85.04 million in October 2005. According to figures released by Federal Bureau of Statistics, the decrease was said to be mainly due to a decrease in leather garment exports - which declined by 27.32% in terms of value compared with October 2005.
A breakdown of the statistics showed that Pakistan exported tanned leather worth $18.7 million, leather goods worth $51.85 million and footwear worth $6.53 million compared with $21.99 million, $55.81 million and $7.24 million respectively in the previous month. This showed a fall of 15% in tanned leather exports, 7.11% in leather goods and 9.83% for footwear.
On a more positive note, Pakistan’s leather exports for the period July to November 2005 stood at $426.58 million compared with $376.78 million for the corresponding period in 2004, equating to an increase of 13.22%. However, a breakdown of the figures showed that tanned leather exports fell during the period decreasing to 5,940,000 m2 valued at $99.39 million compared with 7,596,000 m2 at $123.15 million in July to November 2004 - a decline of 19.3%. During the same period, Pakistan exported leather goods worth $277 million, (which includes leather garments worth $203.66 million, leather gloves worth $58.53 million and other leather goods worth $14.81 million) compared with $206.03 million in 2004 - an increase of 34.44%. Footwear exports stood at $50.198 million (which includes leather footwear exports worth $42.99 million, canvas footwear $1.43 million and other footwear $5.73 million) compared with $47.6 million in the same period a year earlier- a rise of 5.45%.
