The Bangladesh government is to deploy additional law enforcement agencies in an attempt to stop extortion in cattle markets and to control the smuggling of hides of sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, on January 10. The law enforcement agencies include a Rapid Action Battalion and the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), which will be deployed in different cattle markets, and on highways and waterways, to ensure smooth transportation of sacrificial animals.

According to local media reports, the decision was made following a meeting between a delegation from the Bangladesh Tannery Association and the home secretary.
