Japan to resume U.S. beef imports

08/12/2005

Japan has announced it will lift its two-year ban on U.S. and Canadian beef imports next Monday. A resumption of imports, which will be limited to meat from cows younger than 21 months, will signal and end to the dispute that has nagged the two allies since Japan closed its doors to American beef in December 2003 after the first U.S. case of mad cow disease.

Officials said once the decision is finalised Monday, importers will be allowed to start buying U.S. and Canadian beef, which is expected to appear in Japanese shops before the end of the year.

The Cabinet Office's Food Safety Commission Thursday will submit a final report to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to permit the resumption of imports, saying that the risk of mad cow disease in U.S. and Canadian beef imports "is extremely low."
