Pakistan’s leather sector exports increase 2% from last month

During October, Pakistan's leather sector exports increased by 2% to $85.061 million from $83.502 million in September 2005, mainly due to an increase in the export of tanned leather - which recorded a growth of 78.52% in terms of quantity and 76.70% in terms of dollar value over September, according to data released by Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics.

The breakdown showed that the country exported tanned leather worth $21.999 million, leather goods $55.819 million and footwear $7.243 million compared to $12.450 million, $62.283 million and $8.769 million respectively the previous month. This showed tanned leather exports were up by 76 / 70 / 46% respectively, but leather goods manufacturing and footwear exports dropped by 10.38% and 17.40% compared with previous month.

Pakistan’s total leather exports during July-October stood at $340.233 million compared to $304.025 million in the corresponding period in 2004, showing a growth of 12%. During July-October, the country exported 4,467,000 sq.m of tanned leather at $73.805 million compared to 6,136,000 sq.m at $101.231 million in July-October 04. The exports of leather goods were worth $223.890 million, (which includes leather garments of $166.450 million, leather gloves $49.475 million and other leather goods worth $7.966 million) compared to $162.936 million in the corresponding period last year. The export of footwear stood at $42.538 million (which included leather footwear worth of $38.440 million compared to $ 31.697 million, canvas footwear $1.349 million and other footwear $2.749 million) compared with $39.858 million for the same period a year ago.
