25/11/2005

According to a report published by Agencia Brasil, Lebanon and Morocco have introduced bans on the imports of Brazilian meat. Ukraine authorities have also expanded restrictions on Brazilian meat. This brings to 51 the total number of countries that have imposed partial or total restrictions on Brazilian products since the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the country.

Preliminary information released by the Ministry of Foreign Relations stated that the Ukrainian government is now banning meat not only from Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, but from the entire country.

Argentina has also increased commercial restrictions. It has now imposed a ban on all meat from the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Minas Gerais (in the central west, south, and southeast regions of the country).
On a slightly more positive note, Israel - one of the largest importers of Brazilian meat – has relaxed restrictions. The embargo, which covered the entire country, now only applies to meat from Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, and São Paulo.
The countries that have imposed restrictions on Brazilian meat include South Africa, Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Chile, Singapore, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, Israel, Lebanon, Malaysia, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine, the European Union, and Uruguay.
