24/11/2005

According to a survey recently carried out by the Punjab Provincial Government, there are about 880 tanneries, leather garment, gloves, footwear, and leather goods manufacturers in the Punjab Province of Pakistan. A breakdown of the figures showed that there are 526 tanneries, 201 leather garment manufacturers, 96 footwear manufacturers, 49 leather goods manufacturers, seven other leather products manufacturers and a sports goods producer in the region. It is known that there are many more sporting goods manufacturing facilities in the area, particularly in Sialkot city; however, these were not specifically covered by the survey.

Some interesting facts were also discovered during the survey. One of the oldest tanneries, M/s. Haji Nazir Tanneries, Kasur, in Punjab was established in 1920 (pre-partition of the sub-continent) with initial capital of only Rs500, 000 ($8,333). The famous shoe manufacturer, Bata Pakistan Ltd. Lahore was set up in 1942 in Lahore with initial capital of Rs53, 840,000.
