Despite Brazil’s problems over beef exports due to the recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease, sales of Brazilian pork are flourishing. According to statistics released by the Brazilian Pork Exporters Association (Abipecs), pork export revenues reached US$121.8 million in October, and shipments totalled 65,500 tonnes, an increase of 55% in terms of value and 45% in terms of volume compared with the same month in 2004.
From January to October, foreign pork sales totalled US$1 billion, an increase of 63% in comparison with the first 10 months of last year. Shipments totalled 539,100 tonnes of pork, 27.4% more than in the same period in 2004.
