BMC set for success
It seems that the Botswana Meat Comission’s (BMC) efforts to turn the fortunes of its loss-making abattoirs around may have been successful, as acting CEO Sonny Molapisi has now announced that the state-owned company is set to record positive results for fiscal 2005. This comes only a few months after the BMC announced that it had submitted a proposal to the government to implement changes to improve production at its facilities when it was revealed that the abattoirs were often processing fewer than 600 cattle a day rather than the required 1,200.
However, several months down the line, the company appears to be performing better thanks to improved prices for the BMC and the maximisation of its output.
The company has also managed to reduce overheads through actions such as drilling its own boreholes, which has significantly reduced water bills.
