Brazil’s Abiec predicts that meat exports will miss export target

31/10/2005

According to a statement by executive director of the Brazilian Association of Meat Export Industries (Abiec), Antonio Jorge Camardelli, Brazilian beef exports are likely to miss this year's target of $3 billion, as a consequence of the crisis caused by the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the country.

Mr Camardelli revealed that exporters are forecasting that foreign sales contracted this month will be 30% less than in September and is set to worsen in November. He added, however, that he believes that, based on the joint efforts that are being undertaken by the private sector and the government, a recovery in exports could begin as early as December.

Data from the Ministry of Industry, Development, and Foreign Trade shows that exports of fresh beef in September amounted to $210 million, 18% lower than in August but 8.8% higher than in September, 2004. Between January and September of this year, Brazilian beef exports reached a total of $1.9 billion.
