US organisations slam EU over lack of progress in WTO Doha talks

26/10/2005

Members of the AgTrade Coalition, including the US Hides, Skin and Leather Association, have released a statement expressing their deep disappointment with the lack of progress on market access in last week's agricultural meetings under the Doha Development Agenda (DDA).

According to the statement, of the three pillars in these crucial negotiations (market access, export competition, and domestic support), market access now appears to be the topic that could derail the agricultural reform talks, and with them the entire DDA.

It continues, Two weeks ago, the United States presented a bold and politically difficult proposal on domestic supports to demonstrate to the world that it is serious about achieving a successful and significant outcome in these talks.

This proposal and improved offers from other major negotiating partners have not been matched by the European Union. We are pleased that the United States and other countries have called upon the European Union to give further consideration to its position and to return this week with a more ambitious proposal.  Indications from the European Union that any further proposals it might submit will include new demands (e.g. Geographical Indications) rather than further concessions are unacceptable.”

Members of the AgTrade Coalition include American Meat Institute, National Cattlemen's Beef Association, National Chicken Council, National Pork Producers Council, USA Poultry & Egg Export Council, National Renderers’ Association, US Hides, Skin and Leather Association, US Livestock Genetics Export, Inc., and a host of other food organisations.
