Leather garments boost Pakistan’s exports

Pakistan's leather sector recorded a growth of 19.72% in August to reach $93.537 million compared with $78.133 million in July 2005. The increase was attributed to improved performance in the leather garment sector. According to figures from the Federal Bureau of Statistics, during August 2005, Pakistan exported finished leather worth $18.710 million, leather goods worth $61.442 million and footwear worth $13.385 million compared with $20.646 million, $44.346 million and $13.141 million respectively in the previous month. This showed a drop in finished leather exports of 9.38%, however, leather goods exports increased by 38.55% and footwear improved by 1.86% month-on-month.

Pakistan’s total leather exports in July-August 2005 reached $171.67 million compared with $150.304 million in the same period in 2004, an increase of 14.22%.

From July-August 2005, Pakistan exported 39,356,000 m2 of finished leather, leather goods worth $105.788 million, which included leather garments worth $73.35 million, leather gloves worth $25.504 million and other leather products worth $6.928 million. Footwear exports reached $26.526 million which included leather footwear worth $24.348 million, canvas footwear at $0.880 million and other footwear at $1.298 million.
