GM and DCX approve synthetic leather interior materials
The automotive leather upholstery industry has been dealt another blow with the announcement that a leather-like synthetic, protein-based product, produced by Canadian General - Tower Ltd, has been approved for use at DaimlerChrysler. The product was launched with General Motors 14 months ago.
The decision allows use of the material on areas beyond the seats, such as interior door trim, steering wheel covers and shift knobs - anywhere the consumer will touch inside the vehicle, and where leather has been the traditional choice.
The technology is said to provide the characteristics such as a dry, smooth feel, moisture absorption and release properties, excellent cleanabilty, increased utilisation and superior durability, whilst offering an ultra-low-gloss finish to produce a look of elegance and luxury.
