Tanneries sign agreement for cleaner production

07/10/2005

Argentina's Tanning Industry Chamber (CICA) and the local Environmental and Sustainable Development Department have signed an agreement to establish a Cleaner Production Programme for Tanneries within the National Clean Production Policy. Some of the largest tanneries in the country have joined the programme. CICA has appointed engineer Osvaldo Cado as facilitator of the programme and the Environmental Department has appointed engineer Roberto Escobar as a consultant to help tanneries develop individual projects.

One of the main purposes of this programme is to promote the competitiveness and productivity of the companies involved, helping them to evaluate environmental aspects as business strategies with special emphasis in prevention measures. The programme also shows how to generate environmental and social benefits for the community," said Mr Escobar.

He added, Preventing pollution often lowers industrial costs resulting in an improvement of the company's profitability; a decrease in the use of raw materials, water and energy; a reduction of emissions and effluent and solid waste discharge as well as a drop in exposure levels improving labour and health conditions for workers and the community.”

The following tanneries have joined the programme: Curtarsa (Curtiembre Argentina SAIyC), CIDEC (Compañía Industrial Del Cuero S.A.), Sadesa S.A., Antonio Esposito S.A., Curtiembre Becas S.A., Industrias Magromer Cueros Y Pieles S.A. and Curtiembre Arlei S.A.
