Brazilian footwear blocked in Argentinian ports

There has been much talk of the ‘bra wars’ in Europe, with millions of Chinese-made garments being blocked in European ports due to quotas being filled, but, however, a similar situation is occurring in Argentina, although there seems to be little media coverage of this.
According to a report in Agencia Brasil, following Argentina ’s decision to implement new rules for importing footwear on September 1, more than 620,000 pairs of Brazilian shoes have been blocked by customs at the border.
The Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados) estimates that goods worth US$5 million are being held up, not only on the border, but also in warehouses inBuenos Aires . Meanwhile, on the Brazilian side of the border, thousands more pairs of shoes, which should have already been shipped to Argentina , are stock-piled in factories in Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo .
Abicalçados stated that this situation has arisen as the new rules on imports were implemented with little warning. "This was an unexpected and radical decision. It means we have to request a new license, which can take 60 days,” a spokesperson from Abicalçados said.
Last yearBrazil exported 15.3 million pairs of shoes to Argentina . In the first half of this year the total to date is 6.5 million.
