According to local media, another 48 foot-and-mouth disease cases have been reported in three Primorye districts in Russia's Far East near the Chinese border, bringing the total number of infected cattle to 238.

Quarantine has been introduced in the districts and disinfection measures are being taken. Up to 73,000 of the territory's 103,000 cattle have been vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease. The authorities have recommended that local residents refrain from leaving their communities. Only Interior Ministry vehicles and ambulances are allowed to enter the infected area.

China
's Ministry of Agriculture has said they have no information that the disease has crossed the border and would take immediate action if such an event occurred. Officials have identified the strain as the Asia-1 form of the virus, which is the same type that wreaked havoc in Britain four years ago.
