According to Rafeeqee Ahmed, director of India’s Leather Export Association, the growth of India’s leather industry has attracted interest from Chinese shoe manufacturers who are now considering investing in India.
He said that a large Chinese shoe producer had recently visited tanneries in India and made enquiries concerning labour costs and the infrastructure of the country. He believed that this is the beginning of more and more Chinese shoe manufacturers setting up Indian production sites because of the country’s abundant resources of ox hide.
According to figures published by the Bombay Economic Times, India exported hides worth $698 million in 2004 and China was the largest importer. The figure showed that China accounted for 46% of India’s hide exports and that demand is still increasing.
