Bids sought for combined effluent treatment plant for Korangi tanneries
Pakistan Tanners Association Environmental Society has sought bids for the construction of allied conveyance system for Combined Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) for Korangi tanneries. The other components of are the Allied Conveyance Systems including a 'Collection and Conveyance System' to carry tannery effluent to the main plant and a 'Dilution Line Works’ that will bring the raw domestic sewage from KW&SB Pumping Station PS-II located in Sector 15, Korangi Industrial Area, Karachi to the CETP Site. The Korangi Effluent Treatment Plant was launched with a total cost of Rs500 million. Out of that, the share of the Export Promotion Bureau stood at Rs336 million (68 per cent), Pakistan Tanneries Association was required to pay Rs136 million (27-28 per cent), while the share of the Sindh Government was Rs22 million (4.5 per cent), whereas 3 per cent in the shape of technical assistance was provided by the Dutch government.
The estimated capacity of the plant is 43,000 cubic metres per day, out of which 16,500 cubic metres per day is of tannery effluent and remaining is domestic effluent. At present, all untreated industrial waste from nearly 170 tanneries in the Korangi Industrial Area fall directly into the sea through Korangi Creek.
