German specialty chemical company, BASF AG, officially inaugurated a new combined heat and power plant at its Ludwigshafen site on June 30.

The high-efficiency combined heat and power (CHP) plant with a fuel efficiency of 90% operates according to the principle of cogeneration – the combined production of electricity and steam – and will supply the site with 440 megawatts of electricity and 650 metric tons of steam per hour. “Investing in the combined-cycle plant will make BASF less reliant on external electricity suppliers. We now generate 65% of our electricity in our own plants at the Ludwigshafen site compared with 15% percent previously,” said Ernst Schwanhold, head of the environment, safety & energy competence centre.
