Thousands strike in South Africa

28/06/2005

South African workers protested in Cape Town on Monday, June 27 against job losses in the country. It is believed that up to 80% of employees in certain sectors particularly in the textile and clothing industries stayed away from work as a result of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) calling for the strike.

Up to 30,000 workers took to the streets to call for an end to cheap imports and a change in governmental economic policy, which the union and its members believe to be the major causes for the current wave of job losses.
