China opposes EU charges on Chinese footwear imports

China has warned that there could be trade friction if the European Union decides to go ahead with an anti-dumping enquiry on imported Chinese shoes. China’s Ministry of Commerce urged the EU to reconsider launching an investigation as it says that there is no case for such action and that it could lead to tension.
The EU has announced that it will open an official investigation into the imports of particular types of Chinese shoes at the end of June, to establish whether there is a case for anti-dumping measures to be taken.

The EU decided to launch a probe into Chinese footwear imports following the release of statistics showing that imports of certain shoe types had increased by as much as 700% since the ending of WTO quotas on January 1. China claims that these statistics are inaccurate and that any moves to impose anti-dumping measures would contradict the free trade agreements that are in place.
