Eco-efficiency competence centre inaugurated at BASF site in Brazil

23/06/2005

The Espaço ECO Foundation – Latin America’s first centre for applied eco-efficiency, located at BASF’s site in São Bernardo do Campo, was officially inaugurated on June 22. Through the foundation, BASF will offer private companies expertise and technology in the fields of eco-efficiency, environmental education and reforestation in partnership with the German government agency for international cooperation (GTZ) and local partners.

It seems that it is already proving to be a success as BASF announced at the inauguration ceremony that Braskem, a major Brazilian petrochemical company, has already signed the first contract for an eco-efficiency analysis.

The foundation includes a biosphere reserve measuring 290,000 m2 that is officially accredited under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme. As well as providing training and advice with regard to eco-efficiency analyses, Espaço ECO offers technical courses in environmental education and has set aside a special area for raising seedlings for reforestation purposes.
