No new tanneries due to environmental problems

At the inauguration of a week long Environment Awarness meeting jointly organised by the Field Publicity Office, Department of Forests and Bhoomi Trust at Ramanaikanpettai, near Natrampalli, India on June 13, district environment officer M. Panneerselvam pointed out that no new tanneries could be established in the region due to the pollution problems the existing facilities generated. He said that in the Vaniyambadi region, around 165 tanneries attached to the five common effluent treatment plants and 55 with their own individual treatment plants were discharging treated effluent that was affecting water sources.

He said new technological applications like reverse osmosis need to be used to improve the treatment process, so that damage to the underground water sources could be minimised.
