Fawad Ijaz Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (PLGMEA) has submitted proposals regarding the Trade Policy 2005-2006 to the Ministry of Commerce. The proposals are aimed at boosting leather garment exports.

Mr Khan has requested that the Commerce Minister grants 6% research and development support to leather garment and goods exporters. He said that at present Pakistan’s leather garment industry was struggling to compete with China and that in order to survive Pakistan must undertake intensive R&D projects in order to safeguard the industry’s survival in the international market.

He also urged the Commerce Ministry to impose a 20% export tax on raw hides and skins, split and wet blue in order to secure sufficient supply for domestic producers.
