Poland concerned over Chinese imports

13/06/2005

Poland is deeply concerned with the rapid increase of Chinese footwear to the European Union, as it is beginning to threaten the home footwear industry.

The Polish footwear sector in the last decade has undergone severe restructuring and only recently fully adjusted to open market conditions. In 2001 Poland imported 2 million pairs of shoes from China, whilst in 2004 the number rose to 65 million, i.e. two pairs of footwear per head.

EU statistics show a 28% drop in the price of footwear in the region.
