Botswana Government urged to revise beef ban

27/05/2005

The Former deputy governor of the Bank of Botswana Keith Jefferis says Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) Act needs complete overhaul and the ban on live cattle exports lifted. Speaking at the Southern African Global Competitive Hub in Gaborone, he told cattle farmers that the government needs to revise the BMC Act to remove the prohibition of non-BMC export slaughterhouses and beef exports as well as lift the ban on beef imports. He recommended the introduction of national auction system as primary method of cattle sales and price determination along with widespread and regular publication of cattle and beef prices.

He said that Namibian abattoir pays 40 per cent more than the BMC does while the South African pays double the amount the BMC gives to the farmers.

He said a sharp rise in cattle rearing productivity is required to solve the problems that afflict the BMC and the rest of the beef industry.
