Scholl footwear undergoes a revamp

SSL International, the UK group, is turning attention to its flagging Scholl footwear business, which makes the Scholl sandal, known for its conservative designs and orthopaedic qualities.

The group is to launch a fashion-conscious footwear range in the rest of Europe after a successful roll-out in the UK. Scholl’s classic wooden sandals are to be revamped as a must-have fashion item in countries such as France and Italy and incorporate different colours and new styles through tie-ups with designers such as Burberry and Celine.

More modern yet fashionable ranges have recently been launched into upmarket department stores and high street chains in a bid to reverse flagging sales, prompting a 40% surge in sales.

Scholl footcare sales increased 5.3% following the successful rollout of its Party Feet cushioned shoe inserts. These gains helped increase operating profits to £39.8 million ($72.7 million) from £31.3 million ($57.2 million) previously.
