Cognis reports slight increase in sales

20/05/2005

For the first three months of 2005, German specialty chemicals supplier Cognis has reported a 0.4% increase in net external sales to 780 million with the Strategic Business Units (SBUs) of Care Chemicals, Functional Products and Oleochemicals achieving significant growth.

The upward trend in Cognis’ Oleochemicals base stock division continued into the first three months of 2005, with sales rising 1.9% to 107 million.

With sales up 5.7% at 309 million, Care Chemicals, Cognis’ largest SBU, achieved strong growth. Functional Products achieved a significant rise in sales of 3.0% at 197 million.

Nutrition & Health’s sales fell 1.2% 75 million and sales of Process Chemicals stood at 86 million, 18.7% lower than in the same period in 2004. This was largely due to the divestment of the PVC stabilisers business effective July 1, 2004.

Antonio Trius, CEO of Cognis, said: “The first quarter result for 2005 was a strong one. We have to take into account that the first quarter of last year was one of the strongest in Cognis’ history.”

Cognis is a worldwide supplier of specialty chemicals and nutritional ingredients. The company employs about 8,100 people, and operates production sites and service centres in 30 countries.
