Indian leather exports increase 12.9%

India exported leather and leather products worth $1,951.94 million during the 10 months – April 2004 to January 2005, a 12.90% increase over the corresponding period in the prior year of $1,728.94 million.

 

According to leather industry sources, the breakdown showed that during the first 10 months finished leather exports reported an increase of 7.11% to $477.43 million from $445.72 million in 2003/04, leather footwear increased 11.61% to $467.69 million from $419.02 million, leather garments were up 9.56% to $281.73 million from $257.14 million, leather goods rose by 20.40% to $468.91 million from $389.45 million, saddlery and harnesses increased 16.21% to $48.66 million from $41.87 million. However, non-leather footwear rose by 89.72% to $74.20 million from $39.11 in the same period last year whilst footwear components registered a drop in exports of 2.42% to $133.31 million from $136.62 million.
