Produce from cloned animal safe, report claims

14/04/2005

According to a recent study by US and Japanese researchers, meat and milk from cloned cattle is safe for consumption and shows almost identical properties as that of naturally bred animals.

Scientists tested meat from a bull and cow cloned using the “Dolly” technique for over 100 quality criteria. Meat from the cloned cattle was slightly higher in fat and fatty acids but within beef industry standards.

The author of the study, Xiangzhong Yang of the Centre for Regenerative Biology at the University of Connecticut, indicated the findings should ease safety concerns over eating food products from cloned animals.

Whilst the research is at a very early stage it will provide guidelines for further research including larger numbers of clones from different genetic backgrounds.
