EU-Canada veterinary agreement to increase trade

12/04/2005

The European Union (EU) and Canada have agreed on new simplified import rules for pork products and bovine semen from Canada. Through a veterinary agreement signed on April 4 they will recognise the equivalence of each other’s domestic food safety measures, leading to increased trade.

The simplified import certificates for these products will reduce production, inspection and certification costs and should increase trade. A new simplified listing procedure has created much shorter time frames for authorising EU establishments for export to Canada.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the EU's Health and Consumer Protection Directorate (SANCO), which are responsible for the implementation and administration of the Canada-EU Veterinary Agreement, have also concluded an arrangement on information sharing. This arrangement will facilitate the exchange of necessary information, which will help both agencies to respond in situations where there is a risk to human, animal or plant health.
