Tokyo is unlikely to give US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice a timetable for resuming beef imports from the United States when she visits Japan this week, the government said on Tuesday.
Tokyo cut off US beef purchases worth more than $1 billion a year in late 2003 after the United States reported its first case of BSE.
Rice is expected to discuss the 14-month-old beef ban, among other issues, with Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura during her first trip to Asia this week.
The government’s comments came after U.S. senators said on Monday that there was no need to threaten retaliation against Japan while there was still hope Japan would soon lift the ban. The senators said it would be "very good" if Japan was able to resolve the trade irritant during Rice's visit, but they understood it might not be possible.
